Sigma 4 - PPV
Overview
The Sigma 4 PPV Monitoring System is designed to monitor source strength in real time during seismic operations. A Sigma 4 nodal seismograph is placed between the source and the asset to be protected, allowing crews to monitor Peak Particle Velocity, or PPV, as source activity occurs. As the source starts, data is wirelessly transmitted to an Android tablet for analysis and display. At the first sign of a violation, source activity can be halted by the operator, helping protect nearby structures, utilities, and sensitive assets. The system combines Sigma 4 seismic hardware, wireless field display, and Event Monitor software for real-time PPV viewing, post-processing, plots, analysis, and reporting.
Features
- Monitors source strength in real time
- Measures Peak Particle Velocity during source activity
- Displays PPV levels on an Android tablet
- Allows operators to respond quickly to possible vibration violations
- Uses a Sigma 4 nodal seismograph as the digitizing system
- Includes 3C 2Hz geophone
- 24-bit seismic recording system
- Internal battery
- Integrated GPS
- Wi-Fi transmitter support
- Small Wi-Fi module sends PPV data to the Android tablet
- Provides instant results for the operator
- Allows real-time analysis and viewing of PPV levels
- Supports faster on-site decisions
- Data can be downloaded into Event Monitor for post-processing
- Compares observed PPV levels to legal limits
- Analyzes vibration data
- Generates plots and analysis
- Outputs reports for the crew and client
Benefits
- The system places PPV monitoring between the source and the protected asset, helping crews monitor vibration levels before damage or compliance issues occur.
- Real-time wireless display of PPV data allows operators to quickly evaluate vibration levels and halt source activity if limits are approached or exceeded.
- Event Monitor software compares observed PPV levels to legal limits and generates plots, analysis, and reports for project records and client delivery.
- Sigma 4 hardware combines the seismograph, geophone, battery, GPS, and wireless communication into a compact field monitoring system.
- By monitoring source strength in real time, crews can better manage source output and reduce the risk of excessive vibration near sensitive structures.
