Time Sync Unit

Time Sync Unit

Overview

The Time Sync Unit TSU1 is designed to bring GPS timing precision into enclosed locations where normal GPS signals are not available.

The TSU1 provides a simulated GPS timing signal that can be connected to Seismic Source products in place of a standard GPS unit. This allows GPS-style timing synchronization inside mines, buildings, basements, parking structures, underground sites, or other locations without a clear view of the sky.

The unit is first placed outside where GPS signals are available. After obtaining a valid GPS lock, the TSU1 synchronizes its internal high-accuracy oscillator to GPS time. It can then be moved indoors or underground while continuing to output timing synchronization signals.

The TSU1 outputs standard NMEA navigation messages and a standard Pulse-Per-Second timing signal, making it suitable for devices, sources, or receivers that require accurate timing.

Features

GPS Timing Indoors or Underground
  • Provides GPS-style timing synchronization without live GPS reception
  • Designed for enclosed or underground locations
  • Useful in mines, buildings, basements, and parking structures
  • Works anywhere GPS signals are not available
Simulated GPS Timing Output
  • Connects to SSC products in place of a standard GPS unit
  • Provides simulated GPS time synchronization
  • Outputs standard NMEA navigation messages
  • Outputs standard Pulse-Per-Second timing signal
  • Provides last known location information
High-Accuracy Internal Clock
  • Uses a high-accuracy oscillator to maintain timing
  • Synchronizes internal clock to GPS before deployment
  • Typical drift less than 30 microseconds over 72 hours
  • Typical battery life of 72 hours
  • External battery can be added for extended operation
Simple Operation
  • Place the unit outside with a clear view of the sky
  • Allow the TSU1 to obtain GPS lock, typically in about ten minutes
  • Move the unit indoors or underground after synchronization
  • Connect sync output to the recorder or SSC equipment
  • Charge input provided for internal battery charging
Rugged Hardware
  • Simple lightweight rugged enclosure
  • Designed for field deployment
  • Sync output connector for timing synchronization
  • Charge connector for internal battery
  • Status indicators for hit, GPS lock, and power

Benefits

Extend GPS Timing to Difficult Locations
  • TSU1 allows timing synchronization in mines, buildings, basements, parking structures, and other areas where GPS reception is not available.
Maintain Microsecond-Level Timing
  • Once synchronized, the internal oscillator maintains timing with typical drift of less than 30 microseconds over a 72-hour battery period.
Simplify Underground Acquisition
  • Equipment that normally requires GPS timing can be operated in enclosed or underground environments using the TSU1 simulated GPS timing signal.
Work with SSC Source and Recording Equipment
  • The simulated GPS timing output can be used with Seismic Source equipment in place of a standard GPS unit.
Reduce Setup Complexity
  • The TSU1 only needs an initial outdoor GPS lock before being moved to the enclosed work location.
Support Longer Operations
  • The internal battery provides typical 72-hour operation, and an external battery can be added for extended use.
